Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station, Colorado, updated the base entry sign to reflect its name in honor of the new military branch, the U.S. Space Force on Oct. 16, 2021. Cheyenne Mountain SFS changed its name earlier this year, July 26, 2021, along with Peterson and Schriever Space Force Bases. Colorado has the largest contingent of bases named for Space Force. The history of Cheyenne Mountain dates back to 1956, when the initial mission was to protect the country against the Russian threat and has since evolved into what it is today: serving as North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. North Command’s Alternate Command Center, and as a training site for crew qualification.
