Jared Marquis 21st Space Wing Public Affairs PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Team Pete is launching a notification system over the next few months to deliver immediate base-wide emergency information through several different systems. AtHoc - a network-centric emergency mass-notification system - is key to notifying installation personnel during all types of emergencies. The system sends out mass notifications simultaneously via several platforms including email, cell phones and the giant-voice system and is capable of notifying personnel from a single, centralized, web-based program within minutes of an emergency. Notification types range from force-protection condition changes, anti-terror warnings or natural disaster alerts for approaching tornadoes, hurricanes or other emergency situations. "Our goal is to use the system to alert Team Pete of base closures and delays, severe weather, active shooters and other emergencies," said Tech. Sgt. Shubert Mendez, 21st Space Wing command post. In order to use the system, users have to access a self-service module to opt in, which allows them to load personal contact information so they can receive emergency notifications. The only required information for active duty and Department of Defense civilians is unit information, work email and work phone, said Mendez. He also highly recommends users include the following optional information - home email, home or cell phone number and a text messaging number. There is also a spot for an alternate phone number, which Mendez points out is a good place to include a spouse's phone number for situational awareness of what may be happening on base. He added that users can turn the notifications off in the self-service section if they are on leave, deployed, TDY or on crew rest. "The goal of the program is to centralize all emergency information. If it affects Team Pete, we want to be able to get them the necessary information as soon as possible," he said. To avoid overburdening the system, the rollout will be done over the next several months with a time-phased system. The rollout began Feb. 3 and is scheduled to be complete March 9. The command post will notify units when it is their time to register. The rollout will include agencies and members currently on the Air Force network. For tenant units not on AFNET, there will be a manual rollout following the March 9 completion date.
