Classes help prepare for education after separation Published Feb. 23, 2016 By Michelle Brown 21st Space Wing Education Office academic student advisor PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Melvin Castile and Richard Hall, 21st Space Wing Education Office counselors, host a monthly Transition - Goals, Preparation, Success course for members preparing to separate from the military. The course is a component of the Transition Assistance Program, an optional course for those who desire to learn more about successfully entering into an educational program outside of their military service that will best serve their long-term goals and interests. Active Duty and Reservists alike are welcome to attend. The TGPS course helps members determine institutions and programs that best match their educational pursuits. Members discuss the academic process from admissions to graduation. Topics include an evaluation of prevalent degrees in profitable fields, determining types of accreditation, the college application process, strategies for academic success, scholarship and grant opportunities, understanding student loans, and the importance of networking throughout any program. Many Air Force members make efficient use of tuition assistance while they are in the service, and often overlook the benefit of attending a TGPS course. The course is not limited to educational counseling. TGPS offers an interactive discussion on the Montgomery and Post 9/11 GI Bills, a Meyers Briggs Type Indicator assessment, and innovative career counseling as a result of the MBTI evaluation. "The TGPS course gives members an intensive two-day introduction to educational opportunities outside of their military service. They leave with an understanding of education from cradle to grave," he said. "The greatest benefit for attending a TGPS class is empowerment -- for Airmen and their families to become equipped with information and resources to determine a major, select a school, get admitted, and maximize their GI Bill benefits," said Hall. Kehinde OshikoyaPamphille, 21st Force Support Squadron Transition Assistance Program team lead, encourages military members, spouses, and family members to take opportunity of what the education office offers. "Take time to learn and accomplish education and certifications that provide valuable opportunities for your future that are also highly recognized in the civilian sector," he said. The 21st FSS TAP Team exists to assist members one year prior to their planned separation date and two years prior to retirement date. The team encourages an early start while thinking about transiting into civilian life. The TGPS course is offered once a month in the Education Center, Bldg 1141.
