Air University symposium focuses on space education Published Aug. 15, 2007 MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- Space educators and experts converge on Alabama this fall to find common ground on how to better educate students about the country's reliance on the cosmos. Notable speakers from military, interagency and civilian space and educational institutions will present their respective views about the shared national security and economic dependency on space during the Air University Space Education Symposium 2007 Sept. 25-27 in Montgomery. The symposium, sponsored by Air University's National Space Studies Center, aims to help space educators address the challenges for building a shared graduate-level educational foundation. "The symposium will help identify shared dependencies on space from a national security and economic standpoint," said Lt. Gen. Stephen R. Lorenz, Air University commander. "We expect to shape ideas to help forge our nation's course on this pressing issue." Attendance at the inaugural space symposium is geared toward military and civilian space education providers, space system operators and those interested in advancing the state of space education to a broader audience. "We anticipate that those who attend the symposium will leave with a greater appreciation and awareness of the dependencies on space and space capabilities," said Col. Sean McClung, director of the National Space Studies Center. "They will also develop new perspectives and a wider network of space professionals with whom they can collaborate to promote future space issues and initiatives through educational venues." Colonel McClung said he also anticipates the symposium to "initiate a trend of critical thought and analyses of space dependency issues affecting national security and economics, especially at the strategic levels of decision making."
