Thule Operation Pacer Goose
THULE AIR BASE, Greenland -- Greenland contractor personnel offloaded 40-foot containers in support of operation PACER GOOSE, an annual summertime resupply mission to Thule Air Base. The operation is wrapping up at the U.S. military’s northernmost installation, 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle. In July, a Military Sealift Command cargo ship named the American Tern, delivered more than 1.6 million pounds of cargo and a Navy fuel tanker delivered more than 8.2 million gallons of fuel. The cargo received this year will update the furnishings for the lodging facility and also serves as an avenue for delivery of items too large for the regular rotations of aircraft that fly in weekly. The resupply allows the base to operate during its austere winters, when it experiences complete darkness for months and temperatures dip to 30 degrees below zero. (U.S. Air Force photo)
