Peterson hosts 'Idol' competition Published Oct. 4, 2007 By Corey Dahl 21st Space Wing Public Affairs PETERSON AFB, Colo. -- Look out, Kelly Clarkson. Members of Team Pete were channeling their inner American Idols Sept. 28 as the base hosted its first Peterson Idol competition. Organized by the Junior Enlisted Association, the competition featured 11 contestants from both Peterson and Schriever, singing everything from pop ballads to modern rock. Judges then selected three winners along with an audience favorite to receive trophies and cash prizes. The event's goal was to provide a fun activity for both families and single Airmen while also showcasing local talent, said Tech. Sgt. Alyse Partridge, president of the JEA. "Back in the day, when my parents were serving, there used to be competitions and family-friendly events like this all the time," she said. "We wanted to do something similar to help boost morale and get more families involved." With more than 250 people attending, the event was a huge success, Sergeant Partridge said. The JEA hopes to hold the competition again next year, possibly inviting the Air Force Academy to participate as well. "We had a huge response," Sergeant Partridge said. "People kept saying how fabulous the show was. We are definitely looking forward to doing it again." Airman 1st Class Mark Hobbs, who sang a Rascal Flatts song in the competition, said he would definitely be back again. Though he didn't win anything, Airman Hobbs said he just enjoyed having the chance to perform for his fellow Airmen and their families. "Just being part of it - entertaining the base - that in itself is a prize right there," he said.
