FSS dog walk a 'howling' success

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. --  The 21st Force Support Squadron had a howling success at its first Dog Days of Summer Dog Walk Aug. 14 at Eagle Park.

More than 95 dogs and 300 family members came out to enjoy the perfect summer day with their best canine friends. The event focused on a walk route to 21st FSS facilities, including the library, education center, outdoor recreation, ITT, auto hobby, fitness center, bowling center, and aquatics center. This was a Road Show in reverse, which introduced participants to 21st FSS events and programs. McGruff the Crime Dog made a special appearance for photos and to officially launch the walk. The facilities provided free treats and pet items, including special bandanas from the library, and custom treat bags from the education center.

Back at Eagle Park, participants enjoyed food, free treats, prizes, valuable training and adoption information, free photos and giveaways from sponsors. Southeast Colorado Animal Rescue Effort brought out several dogs for adoption.

Participants also enjoyed a live radio broadcast from 11 a.m. to noon at Eagle Park with Bob Warren, host of "All About Dogs," and co-host, Dan Cochell, simulcast on KRDO News Radio 1240AM/105.5FM. A show highlight included a special guest interview with nine-year-old Riley Mers, who gained national media attention after saving her own allergy service dog using the CPR technique developed by Eric Roth, of Colorado CPR. Training demos were presented by Colorado CPR and MuttMasters Canine Academy.

The day ended with prize drawings for pet care products, dog treats, an LCD television, a BluRay DVD player and a MuttMasters canine training gift certificate.
