Military families take hike to Cheyenne Mountain for dinner

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. --  The Deployed Families Dinner, held on the first Friday of each month at Peterson AFB, has become a staple with local military families that have a loved one deployed.

On Aug. 6, Col. Russell Wilson, 721st Mission Support Group commander at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, together with Col. Stephen N. Whiting, 21st Space Wing commander, welcomed nearly 120 military families to the first Deployed Families Dinner at Cheyenne Mountain AFS Mountain Man Park.

As thunderstorms parted before the event kicked off, there was free food, prizes and events for children. The event featured food donated by volunteers including 40 pounds of salt water taffy from a local family-owned candy store. In addition, a 21st Security Forces Squadron Military Working Dogs demonstration entertained guests.

As a special bonus, Jackie Brusseau, 721st Mission Support Group contractor, along with her daughter, brought their two miniature horses for guests to pet and photograph. The CMAFS fire department also had a fire truck on display along with an appearance by Smokey Bear for children.

Typically held at the Peterson AFB Chapel, families received free transportation to and from the mountain park for the event with the help of the 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron at Peterson AFB.
