Lane closures to impact traffic along Powers Boulevard, Airport Road Published Oct. 5, 2016 Colorado Department of Transportation COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – -- The Colorado Department of Transportation removed the traffic signals located at Airport Road and Stewart Avenue as planned Oct. 2. Westbound traffic on Stewart will flow freely from Peterson Air Force Base to the onramp to northbound Powers Boulevard or left onto Airport Road. Eastbound traffic on Airport Road to PAFB will also flow freely. However, traffic on eastbound Airport Road to the northbound Powers Boulevard onramp will stop at the intersection of Airport and Stewart. From Oct. 3-10, lane closures, lane shifts and a detour are expected on Airport Road and Stewart Avenue, as the widening and road improvements continue along Powers Boulevard and Airport Road. On Wednesday, Oct. 5, construction of the new traffic signals at Powers Boulevard and Airport Road began. Temporary closures will be in place for one of the two turn lanes from southbound Powers Boulevard to Airport Road, the right lane on eastbound Airport Road, the right turn lane from eastbound Airport Road to southbound Powers Boulevard, and the dedicated turn lane from northbound Powers Boulevard to eastbound Airport Road. These closures will remain in place until the asphalt paving and leveling course is completed on Airport Road. Around the weekend, one-lane traffic (eastbound) is scheduled on Airport Road, and a detour of westbound Stewart Avenue will be implemented, while westbound traffic will temporarily be diverted to northbound Powers Boulevard onto Platte Avenue. It is expected that drivers entering and exiting Peterson Air Force Base along Airport Road and Stewart Avenue may experience significant delays. Variable Message Signs will be installed informing travelers of traffic conditions on Airport Road and Stewart Avenue during the paving operation. Flaggers will also be present at various designated intersections to assist with the business access on Industrial Loop during the work. Heavy traffic and delays are expected in the area. Alternative routes are advised. Stay Informed: For information about this project, please call the project hotline at 719-593-9239.
