PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Summer is here and with that arises endless opportunities for adventure in Colorado. As long as there is time on the calendar, there are plenty of activities that can easily turn normal hum-drum days into one-of-a-kind experiences.
Outdoor Recreation at Peterson Air Force Base is coordinating countless events and trips for adventure seekers all over Colorado this summer.
Options through Outdoor Recreation include an evening mountain-bike ride, spending a morning or all day white-water rafting, and even hiking to a 14,000 feet summit on a weekend.
Not all of the events are full day or weekend activities. Outdoor Recreation designed a series of fun events that begin when the work day concludes.
Hoppy Trails is unique program that enables bike riders a chance to explore Colorado Spring’s biking trails and microbreweries at the end of the work day. There is a $5 fee for a rental bike and safety equipment. The microbrew visit is optional and any drinks are an out-of-
pocket expense.
“Hoppy Trails is tailored to people who want to get into mountain biking, but want to learn it in a supportive group environment,” said Sara Baker, Peterson Outdoor Recreation head bike mechanic and programmer. “Colorado Springs is known for its trail systems and its microbreweries so it’s a great way to get out, be active and relax.”
For $30, Rock Out When You Clock Out is another after-work program all ages can enjoy.
“For Rock Out When You Clock Out, all you have to do is meet us at a local climbing area such as Red Rocks or Garden of the Gods,” said Julie Campbell, Peterson Outdoor Recreation assistant director. “We will have the ropes set-up ready to belay for you. You can literally show up and climb all evening until the sun goes down and we take care of all the clean-up.”
If the work week is too hectic and weekends are better suited for participating in outdoor activities, Outdoor Recreation has something great in store - white-water rafting! The only requirement for rafting is the ability to swim.
“Half day, full day and overnight rafting are incredible experiences,” said Baker. “You go down some of the most beautiful canyons and all you have to do is enjoy the experience, which is not hard.”
Not all day trips are for the adrenaline junkies. Paddleboarding is a great leisurely way to get out and relax while getting in touch with Colorado’s beautiful surroundings, said Campbell.
“We take you up to Rampart Reservoir, teach you the basics, give you a board and you are free to explore,” said Campbell. “The reservoir is beautiful and quiet. It’s a great activity for all levels. Everyone has a great experience with it.”
Paddleboarding is gaining in popularity, so be quick to schedule an experience before all of the remaining spots run out.
Ultimately there is one trip that rules them all. It is the quintessential Colorado adventurer’s trip. Over a two-day period, the trip takes you through white-water rafting, hiking, camping and provides a sense of accomplishment like no other. At a reduced Outdoor Recreation rate of $195, it’s sure to be a bucket list experience, said Baker.
“This is going to be an awesome trip,” said Baker. “The first day you experience white-water rafting on the river, camp out that evening and then wake up early to hike a fourteener. It’s a very Colorado weekend. You are experiencing two activities that are very popular to this state while being safe at the same time.”
Whether it’s an after work bike ride or a full weekend traversing up mountains, Outdoor Recreation has something for everyone. When planning weekends with family or friends, keep in mind the resources provided to all Department of Defense cardholders by the folks in Outdoor Recreation.
