Swimming is a great, low-impact exercise, a great way to cool off, and can be fun.

As a bonus, swimming is available year-round at Peterson's Aquatic Center.

"Swimming is an excellent cardiovascular fitness activity," said Kimberly Houk, exercise physiologist at the Peterson Health and Wellness Center. "It not only gives you the ability to strengthen your heart, but also gives water resistance. This resistance can serve as a strengthening activity. It's kind of a one-stop-shop for fitness improvement."

It can also improve physical performance through improving personal fitness.

"For most any person with aches, pains or ailments that may preclude land-based exercise, swimming or water exercise can serve as an excellent substitute that can actually improve fitness in an equal manner to land-based activities," she said. "Many individuals with joint pain or injuries can improve their ability successfully, with less pain."

At the Aquatic Center, individuals can participate in lap swimming, open swimming or even tackle the climbing wall before splashing into the water below.

Swimming at the aquatics center is also priced right for nearly any budget. Due to restructuring in the Non-Appropriated Fund system, daily rates are increasing Sept. 1. Daily fees for adults and youth will go up $1 to $5 and $4 respectively; daily fees for active duty will stay the same, a very affordable $2.

Annual passes will go up, too. Individuals will pay $150 per year, or just $12.50 per month. For a family for four or fewer, the cost will be $250, $280 for a family of five or more, or $55 for a quarterly pass.

The new rate information is available at www.21fss.com. For information, call the Aquatic Center at 556-4608.
