Base extends CFC campaign

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The 2013 Combined Federal Campaign has been extended to allow more time for military members and federal employees to sign-up and donate, helping those in need.

Following a regional decision to extend the campaign, Col. John Shaw, 21st Space Wing commander, authorized an extension to the 2013 Combined Federal Campaign here to provide added time to participate; the new end date is Jan. 15, 2014. The extension was because of delays encountered by the recent sequestration during the campaigns initial launch.

"So far, we as a community have raised about $156,000 with 8 percent participation. These donations will substantially help the many charities in the CFC. This year especially, there is a lot of need in our community with the recent fires, floods and furloughs we've experienced," said Maj. Nathan Maertens, 21st Aerospace Medicine Squadron and 21st Space Wing CFC coordinator. "So please, if you haven't done so, I encourage you to donate to a worthy cause."

Senior Airman Leslie Schindler, 21st AMDS and CFC volunteer, talked about her experiences at the Catholic Charities' Marian House soup kitchen in Colorado Springs.

"Volunteering is good for the heart; I volunteer every month at the soup kitchen. Serving an average of 600 meals per day, the Marian House is one of the most giving free-meal services in the city," said Schindler.

"Not only does this charity provide food and assist with a variety of services on a regular basis, but they also have been instrumental in providing exceptional relief to individuals affected by the recent wildfires and floods in the region. They (charities) are doing remarkable things to help our community, but they need your help."

Although volunteers make a vast difference in this organization's aid capabilities, some things cannot be done without monetary donations. Fortunately, the CFC promotes local organizations, and gives donations to charities like the Marian House. It is as simple as making a MyPay allotment.

"The Catholic Charities are just one example of the many great organizations devoted to helping people in need. With the holiday season upon us, and the CFC in full swing, it is a great time to give to those who need it most," said Maertens.
