IG: Complaints resolution, inspections Published June 9, 2014 By 21st Space Wing Inspector General PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Abraham Lincoln once said "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe." We can all benefit from that lesson as we strive to ensure our efforts to lead our people and give them the proper tools to comply with regulatory guidance. The Peterson AFB Inspector General office provides the 21st Space Wing, tenant commanders and assigned personnel responsive complaints resolution, fraud, waste and abuse prevention, and high-level inquiry programs characterized by objectivity, integrity and impartiality. The primary charge of the IG is to sustain a credible Air Force IG system by ensuring a responsive complaints resolution program. The IG system ensures that Air Force personnel are free from any form of retribution, retaliation or reprisal for communicating with the IG. A successful complaint resolution program is designed to enhance the wing's discipline, readiness and warfighting capability. The IG's roles and responsibilities are outlined in AFI 90-301, Inspector General Complaints Resolution, including procedures and requirements for handling complaints and investigations. In addition to complaint resolution, IG personnel manage inspections and compliance under the authority of AFI 90-201, The Air Force Inspection System. Discipline and preparation lead to maintaining a culture of compliance and meeting mission requirements. Each commander is responsible for inspecting the functions under his or her command, and the IG supports those efforts by training wing inspection team members and by planning and executing emergency management exercises. It is vital to constantly evolve and improve in regards to compliance through critical thinking, problem solving and professional expertise. Know the regulations and where to find information -- knowing is the foundation of compliance. The installation IG is Dr. L J Van Belkum.
