17th Expeditionary Space Control Squadron returns home

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. --  A team of Airmen assigned to the 21st Space Wing and the 21st Security Forces Squadron returned home May 30, after completing deployments to support space control operations as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The team's return culminated in a stand-down ceremony for the 17th Expeditionary Space Control Squadron after a two-year mission to Southwest Asia.

Most recently activated in 2012, the 17th ESPCS boasts a storied lineage that includes Cold War assignments with the Air Defense Command and various overseas duty stations.

Returning space operations personnel of the 21st SW remain charged with deploying globally to monitor signal activity of military and government leased communication satellites to conduct risk assessments and maintain quality control standards in support of U.S. Central Command defensive counter-space operations.

The returning Defenders assigned to the 21st SFS will maintain the challenging deployment tempo at the home station to which their unit has grown accustomed.

Col. David Miller, 21st Operations Group commander, specifically commended members of the team who embodied the warfighter spirit and praised the efforts of the returning contingent.

"The success of this unit is a testament not only to their professionalism and competency in mission execution but also to the sacrifice they and their families make each and every day to support the fight overseas," said Miller. "It is with great pleasure and pride that we congratulate all those who served as members of the 17th ESPCS, and on behalf of the 21st Space Wing commander and Air Force Space Command leadership, we thank them for a mission well done."
