Team Pete holds annual sports and field day

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The sun was out and smiles abound as Team Pete held its annual sports and field day June 19 here. Thousands participated in several events ranging from Texas Hold'em and bowling to cycling and tug-of-war.

Some sun-bathed while watching volleyball and listening to a live DJ, others were sweating it out on the track. With more than 30 events and a free picnic, the base got to spend quality time together enjoying the outdoors and participating in some fun competitive events.

"The weather really played a big role in this year's sports and field day," said Roger Hill, 21st Force Support Squadron athletic director. "Each year we try to make the event bigger and bigger, we had great participation this year."

Included in the participation were more than a hundred volunteers, several local sponsors, several hundred spectators and more than 1,000 athletes.

"(Sports and field day) was an excellent event; a lot of people were having a great time and there was a lot of team building," said Senior Master Sgt. Patricia English, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron superintendent. "This was only my second week at work and it was a great introduction to the base."

Each year, units compete in the small, medium and large team categories and are awarded points based upon participation, game management and volunteer work.

"Everything went very well thanks to the volunteer and sponsor support," said Hill. "We had great food and great competition."

The winners this year include:
Small unit category
First: 4th Manpower Requirements Squadron - 62 points
Second: 544th Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance Group - 58 points
Third: 13th Air Support Operations Squadron - 47 points

Medium unit category
First: 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron - 49 points
Second: Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center - 48 points
Third: 16th Space Control Squadron - 13 points

Large unit category:
First: Team Colorado (Space and Missile Systems Center) - 145 points
Second: 21st Dental Squadron - 131 points
Third: 21st Civil Engineer Squadron - 130 points

The 4th MRS, 544th IRSG, 21st LRS and Team Colorado are all repeat winners from the previous year.

Next year, Hill said Team Pete members can expect more events, possibly including Frisbee golf.
