Tri-Wing Sports Challenge massive success

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. --  On a cleat-torn, sweat-soaked field of grass, fans hollered and cheered the tug-of-war teams from Buckley, Peterson, and Schriever Air Force bases during the final event of the Tri-Wing Sports Challenge hosted by Team Pete Aug. 27.

Although the Airmen of Schriever dominated the tug-of-war competition, the Knights of the 21st Space Wing amassed 93 points throughout the day earning them the title of Tri-Space Wing Sports Challenge Champions. Schriever came in second place with 62 total points and Buckley in third with 38 points.

However, it was the passion, determination and sportsmanship of every Airman competing that day that encapsulated what the event was truly about.

Maj. Gen. David Buck, Air Force Space Command vice commander, spoke briefly about the importance of events like the sports challenge as he presented the championship trophy.

"It's a chance to get to know other Airmen outside the office on a more personal level," Buck said. "Our Air Force is going through some challenging times, so it was a great opportunity to have fun and still get the mission done."

Col. John Shaw, 21st Space Wing commander, accepted the trophy on behalf of Team Pete stating how proud he was of his Airmen.

"I'm happy we won, but really we're all a part of the larger team," said Shaw. "Today was really about the three Front Range space wings getting together for some good fun."

Col. Dennis O. Bythewood, 50th SW Operations Group commander, and Col. William J. Liquori, 50th SW commander, both participated in the ball hockey event and raved about how exciting the events were.

"We had an absolute blast here today," Liquori said. "Regardless of the results and who won, we had fun and are ready for next year."
