Cop’s corner Published Oct. 21, 2014 By 21st Security Forces Squadron PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Tip of the Month (Traffic) - Speed limits are 5 mph whenever passing any troop movements or formation walks/runs. Drivers will yield the right-of-way to marching troop formations, slow their vehicle to 5 mph when approaching from any direction, and when passing the formation, use extreme caution. The driver will comply with the troop formation road guard instructions and not overtake a troop formation marching in the same direction until instructed by the troop commander to pass. Calls for service - Security forces responded to about 200 calls for service during September, including: - 49 human error alarm activations - 10 medical responses - 5 motor vehicle accidents - 5 larcenies of government property (including AAFES/DECA shoplifting) - 1 larceny of private property at the fitness center Tip of the Month - Eagle Eyes. The Eagle Eyes program is an Air Force anti-terrorism initiative that enlists the eyes and ears of Air Force members, civilians, contractors and family members. There are several categories of suspicious activity; however, the two main activities you are likely to observe are elicitation and surveillance. Elicitation is the suspicious questioning of personnel by any means about Department of Defense structures, functions, personnel or procedures. Examples of this could include being approached at a gas station (or mall, library, etc) asked about what's happening on base; being contacted and asked about troop strength numbers, how a vehicle can get access to base or even the location of a particular building. Surveillance is the monitoring of activity of DoD personnel, facilities, processes or systems, including showing unusual interest in any of these. This could include someone recording or monitoring activities through the use of cameras, note taking, using binoculars or annotating maps. Contact the law enforcement desk immediately at 556-4000 if you observe suspicious activity. These incidents are investigated immediately upon receipt. You may second guess yourself as to whether the situation was really suspicious; however, let security forces and AFOSI make this determination. Off Base Incidents - Security forces receive notification of some off base arrests or incidents involving military members or government property. These included an incident of domestic violence. Security forces also conducted about 390 community policing patrols such as walk throughs of dormitories, the fitness center, and other high-traffic areas.
