Leaders from local military and civilian institutions attended the inaugural Mental Health First Aid Class here April 21.

Those who participated became certified Mental Health First Aide care givers. They learned how to respond in a mental health emergency and how to offer support to someone who appears to be in emotional distress.

Certified instructors Vicky and Larry Daub have an extensive background in serving the military community. Topics for the course included recognizing the symptoms of mental health problems, offering initial help and listening nonjudgmentally, giving reassurance, information, and how to encourage people to seek appropriate professional help.

Participants were enthusiastic about the course that gave them resources and tools for immediate use when faced with a crisis situation. All left with a better comfort level when faced with a situation where somebody requires assistance. "All military leaders should take the course," said one attendee. The course is targeted to E-5 and above.

The next Mental Health First Aid course is 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. June 23. Course content will focus on assisting youth facing a mental health crisis and is targeted toward military parents, helping agencies, caregivers, and others who may interact with youth. Interested parties must have appropriate base access to attend the course. For information, contact Bev Price at 556-6768 or email 21sw.caib.ids@us.af.mil.
