The investigation began at approximately 10 a.m. when the package was found in a mail distribution building outside of the mountain, designed to sort and screen packages before entering the secure complex. Responders from Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Peterson Air Force Base, Fort Carson and El Paso County Sherriff's Office responded to the scene. No operational missions inside the complex were affected. Explosive ordnance disposal and bioenvironmental engineering teams from Peterson, and a hazardous materials team from Fort Carson investigated the scene. "I have full confidence in our emergency responders who worked diligently to resolve the situation. Our partnership with area responders worked flawlessly to ensure the safety of our personnel and the neighboring community," said Col. Gary Cornn, 721st Mission Support Group and CMAFS installation commander. An investigation will determine the package's origin.
