Peterson’s ‘Secret Garden’

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Hiding in the far off land of east Peterson Air Force Base, which to some is considered barren, is what Les Stewart likes to call the "outpost."

"It's the best kept secret of Peterson Air Force Base," the 21st Force Support Squadron special programs manager said.

There are a variety of amenities that have gone unnoticed since it's opening several years ago, he said. The majority of Peterson Airmen don't know the extent of what is offered out there.

For example, immediately to the left of the driveway is a miniature golf course. Who knew that was there? In addition, Peak View Park offers sand volleyball, horseshoes, Frisbee golf, a playground, and a pavilion with gas grills, which are available for use.
Equipment is available for use, free of charge, for any of these amenities from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon-6 p.m. Saturdays. Stewart said the amenities can be used outside those hours if Airmen bring their own equipment.

Another feature of the park is 10 new garden plots, bringing the total to 20. Tools are also provided to anyone wanting to utilize the garden plots. It is first come, first served. Stewart said everything is provided, including available water, high grade soil and a complete gardening tool kit.

The park is also planning for the future with some additional upgrades. Stewart said the park is the site of a future FamCamp (RV family camp site). It will be a place where Airmen and their families or retirees can park their RVs and camp, typically for up to two weeks.

Stewart's team is also planning events, like a star gazing night and a night glow run, he said.

Many of the events on base are a cheaper and more local version of what Airmen search for off-base. They just aren't aware it's offered here. Keep an eye out for information on new and upcoming events.

"I would put our programs up against anyone else," he said. "At Peterson, we exceed the Air Force requirements."
