Space Soldier saves lives

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Three Soldiers came to the rescue of two women who were stabbed early on the morning of Aug. 23 after a bachelorette party in downtown Louisville, Kentucky.

The Soldiers, who are currently in recruiting school at Fort Knox, Kentucky, were out celebrating their last week of class when they heard the cries for help from sisters Sherrie and Melissa Snader.

One of the Soldiers, Sgt. Micah Stoke, who is assigned to 4th Space Company, 1st Space Battalion, 1st Space Brigade, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command, in Colorado Springs, said they didn't hesitate to administer first aid.

"It was almost like second nature to react to something like that," Stoke said.

The three Soldiers visited and formally met Melissa and bride-to-be Sherrie at the hospital the day after the incident.

The doctor and nurse of the victims told the Soldiers that what they did for the bride-to-be leading up to getting her into an ambulance was lifesaving.

"Luckily we had some trained personnel there," said Stoke. "Everybody in the Army takes basic lifesaving skills courses to be able to do something like that."

Stoke said the incident was life changing for him.

"One of the most memorable events now in my life is actually seeing those two girls in the hospital," he said. "I've never been in a situation where someone has thanked me for saving their life. That's something I'll remember until the day I die.

The hero Soldiers were invited to the wedding which has been rescheduled for next month in Ohio.
