The Peterson Air Force Base Aquatic Center closed Nov. 2 for deck replacement. The work is slated for completion within 100 days and the center is expected to reopen in February.

Stephen Steinke, center manager, said the deck's time has come.

"It's at the end of its life cycle," he said. "It is cracked, ugly, worn and not as abrasive, which is a safety concern."

The process of restoring the deck began with draining the pool, which holds hundreds of thousands of gallons of water. Just the draining process takes a week, Steinke said. Since the entire deck area is being replaced, the next step is to remove and store the existing equipment.

"They have to take out the slide, diving board... everything but the sauna," he said. The items will be stored in containers located in the parking area until the project is complete.

While the pool is not in use for a while, Steinke will remain busy planning events and programming improvements to implement once the facility reopens. A white board near his office is covered on both sides with ideas from brain storming sessions.

"We are going to set this place up to become a huge success. We've got some plans for this place. We want to make it into a social hub," Steinke said. "None of the other centers around have the amenities we have."

Steinke has a big grand re-opening celebration in the works.

"We don't have all the details yet, but we are thinking big," he said.
