The Peterson Fitness Center's much needed renovations to the aerobics room floor and functional fitness room were completed on Dec. 7.

"We're converting a racquetball court to a continuation of our functional fitness room, seeing that functional fitness or the extreme workouts are very popular," said Roger Hill, Fitness and Sports manager. "We are trying to expand it due to its popularity so we want to give the customers what they are looking for and that is more space."

The new functional fitness room will be in the racquetball court right next to the other functional fitness room. The first room tends to get overcrowded and possibly unsafe, said Hill. There are still three other racquetball courts for gym members' use.

"We are looking to get functional fitness instructors in here as well that help teach us how to use the equipment safely, for example posing and training classes," said Hill. "We are also looking at getting some of the staff trained so we can have classes in here as well to make it safer since some of the workouts are extreme."

Along with the additional functional fitness room, the aerobics room received a new floor. The old floor was pushing over 30 years old, said Hill.

The new floor will be able to support everything from yoga to Zumba and the step aerobics classes.

"I'm really excited about the newly improved renovations," Hill said. "I'm excited we had a chance to do this and bring more customers in here. I think we offer a lot of perks to come in here by offering a lot of the equipment at the base level, compared to the gyms off base, for example, the high technology, modern equipment."
