21st Space Wing wins 2015 General Thomas S. Moorman, Jr. award

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The 21st Space Wing was named Air Force Space Command's best overall operational wing and received the 2015 General Thomas S. Moorman, Jr. Award at a ceremony here March 23, 2016.

"This award is truly a testament to the outstanding and hard work each and every Knight performs every day," said Col. Douglas A. Schiess, 21st Space Wing commander. "Chief Peele and I are very proud of you and all of your accomplishments this year. You took my initial call to arms of "Let's Do This" to heart and you did it!"

Schiess and Chief Master Sgt. Idalia Peele, 21st SW command chief accepted the award on behalf of the men and women of the 21st SW.

Retired Gen. Thomas S. Moorman, who the award is named after, presented the award at the AFSPC heritage dinner.

"It was an even greater honor to receive the award last night from a living legend - Gen. Moorman himself," Schiess added. "Gen. Moorman was pleased to present the award to his former wing."

Moorman served as the 1st Space Wing's (precursor to the 21st SW) vice commander from July 1984 to March 1985, and went on to be the commander of Air Force Space Command and eventually the vice chief of staff of the Air Force.

The 21st SW had already won the 2015 AFSPC General Robert T. Herres award for being the best wing in the command with a space mission.

"This award isn't just a testament to the great work the Airmen do here at Peterson," said Schiess. "This award recognizes every unit around the world that falls under the 21st Space Wing, which working together delivers unrivaled space superiority to our nation and its allies."
