The Defense Health Agency Dental Laboratory Training Workshop, which took place 24–26 March 2026, brought together military dentists and dental laboratory technicians from across the Army, Navy, and Air Force for a focused training experience designed to enhance patient care and operational readiness across the Military Health System.

The workshop provided advanced education and hands-on instruction for military dentists and dental laboratory technicians across multiple specialties. Training was delivered with support from civilian industry partners and focused on contemporary clinical and laboratory methods, digital workflows, and technologies that enhance patient care across the Military Health System.

Instruction covered a broad range of dental laboratory and clinical topics, including certification-level training on advanced computer-aided design/computer-aided Manufacturing software, customized tooth characterization, and other modern restorative techniques. The curriculum was designed to strengthen technical proficiency, improve clinical and laboratory integration, and support consistent, high-quality outcomes across DHA.

There was also a dedicated breakout session for all 11 designated U.S. Air Force training bases. This forum allowed representatives to review upgrade training programs, align standards, and improve curriculum consistency for technicians entering the field.

The joint nature of military dentistry was reflected through the collaboration of personnel from across the Department of War for shared education and training. The U.S. Air Force has hosted the event for nearly 30 years, and current efforts are focused on broadening that partnership to include engagement with the Department of Veterans Affairs, in support of greater enterprise integration and capacity.

“The workshop advances the mission by giving attendees current skills and practical knowledge they can apply immediately in their clinics and laboratories,” said Tech. Sgt. David Swofford, 21st Dental Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of Defense Health Agency central dental laboratory operations.

This workshop developed service members who are adaptable, highly skilled, and prepared to perform in demanding environments. Exposure to modern technology, standardized processes, and joint best practices strengthened their ability to provide reliable support to military treatment facilities worldwide and sustain readiness across the enterprise.  It also offered professional development and networking value by connecting attendees across services, installations, and specialties.

“It is one of the few forums where military dental laboratory professionals can engage in a concentrated, enterprise-level training environment tailored to their mission,” Swofford said.
