The finance career field is one of the latest specialties to be reshaped as "transformation" sweeps across the Air Force, and Peterson Airmen will be among the first to experience the new way of doing business.

The Air Force Financial Services Center is scheduled to open in October 2007 at Ellsworth AFB, S.D. First to open at the agency will be a central processing center with a call center due the following year.

The AFFSC will provide many of the financial services bases currently provide. Central processing will take over transaction processing such as military pay documents and non Defense Travel System travel voucher processing. Air Force Space Command will be the first command to transfer work to the AFFSC.

"The initial change should be transparent to the customer," said 1st Lt. Steven Tatro, 21st Comptroller Squadron.

Documents will be faxed to central processing by base finance personnel for handling. Down the road, as the call center comes on line and the local finance office is reduced to a small customer service contingent, customers will be able to obtain round-the-clock support from home or office instead of making a trip to the local finance office.

"Although many details will be worked out as AFFSC comes online, it will be a great thing for the Air Force as a whole, and the finance career field as we attempt to mold the way we do business so that it will better support the customer and the mission of the Air Force," the lieutenant said.

Transformation is the process by which the military achieves and maintains an advantage through changes in operational concepts, organization, or technologies that significantly improve warfighting capabilities or ability to meet the demands of a changing security environment, according to www.af.mil.

The process in the finance career field started with the utilization of MyPay and the Defense Travel System, which allow members to update allotments, print leave and earnings statements or file travel vouchers on-line.
