Recent weather has not been conducive to playing outdoor sports like tennis, but when the opportunity arises and players head for a game of tennis here, they will notice significant improvements to the courts.

"All four of the Peterson Fitness Center tennis courts are receiving a major face lift: new playing surface, new tennis nets and poles, new windscreens, new backboards and limited replacement of court fencing on courts 3 and 4," said Ben Beck, director of the Fitness and Sports Center. "We do not have an opening date but will publicize that once 21 CES releases the courts back to us. Winter play is encouraged."

A new playing surface was added in early November. Called Sport Deck IV, it is an International Tennis Federation certified, medium-pace floor. That means it is slower than a hard surface but faster than clay. The suspended modular surface is touted as being better for joints, and any damaged sections can be easily replaced.

New nets have also been added, and the backboards will be replaced or reconditioned as weather permits.

Courts 1 and 2 can be reserved by calling the Fitness Center at 556-4462; courts 3 and 4 are available on a first come, first served basis.
