Hundreds of servicemembers and civilians stopped by the fitness center May 18 to learn about everything from the latest in "cleansing" products to programs at the YMCA.

Drawing roughly 400 attendees, the center's annual Health and Wellness Fair featured dozens of local exhibitors offering booths full of information, product samples and coupons. In its seventh year at Peterson, the fair is meant to introduce the base community to the different health and wellness options and services available in Colorado Springs, said organizer Roger Hill, the center's special programs director.

"We're trying to build community between some of the military people and the people off base by having them come here and show everyone what they have to offer," he said.

The event drew fewer people than the 3,000 it usually averages, Mr. Hill said - most likely because of an Armed Forces week luncheon scheduled for the same time - but many people attending the fair said they found all the information helpful.

"I'm always looking for ways to get healthier, so this is a great way to find out what's new," said Senior Master Sgt. Peggy Scott. "If I can avoid taking prescription medicines by doing something natural, I will."

Vendors said the fair is equally helpful for them. John Steen, co-owner of Chiropractic Works in Colorado Springs, said he has exhibited at the show for the last two years because it helps get the word out about his business, especially among members of the military community.

"We love to work with the military personnel," he said. "They do such a great job for us in all that they do. It's an honor to help them."
