The aquatics center here has come a long way since its groundbreaking ceremony Dec. 18, 1989, and by early 2008, it will be better than ever.

For those who are new to the area or those who may not have had the opportunity to visit, the aquatics center is a one-stop shop for fitness. What started out in 1989 as an uncovered seasonal pool, now includes treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bikes, a pair of eight-person therapeutic spas, a co-ed dry sauna, a wading pool, and a year-round indoor pool with diving board, handicap swim lift and an 18-foot slide.

The center is definitely a highly-used, valuable asset here as the center sees about 130,000 visits each year, according to Ms. Laura Runyon, aquatics director. For some, the aquatics center aids the rehabilitation process.

"The aquatic center is key to our physical therapy comprehensive program(s) because it's a safe, effective, and inexpensive way of using water to preserve health and treat ailments," said Lt. Col. Raymond Bailey, 21st Medical Services flight commander. "The pool provides a weightless environment which is beneficial for muscle and joint conditioning; especially when a land-based program is counterproductive. Early intervention provides our patients an opportunity to return to "Fit-to-Fight" status without delay."

Current renovations include a new roof accentuated by skylights, non-slip flooring for the main deck, an air handling system and floor drainage.

"These renovations are needed to provide the best service possible," Ms. Runyon said. "There was a hardwood ceiling placed over the pool in 1992, but with snow and rain damage, it was determined an overhaul needed to be conducted."

The project is projected to last 12 to 18 months from its start date, Nov. 1, 2006. All services offered at the pool before renovations will resume once the aquatics center reopening, tentatively set for early 2008. For information, contact Ms. Runyon at 556-6192.
