BALAD AIR BASE, Iraq -- Staff Sgt. Edward Nicandro, 332nd Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron spall unit member, cuts out a jagged section of the runway that was dislodged by an aircraft here, April 28. The sections of the runway that crack or split are called spalls, these spalls cause foreign object debris that could potentially disable aircraft engines.
