Tragic accident gave base its name
An F-4 “Photo Lightning” (pictured here) is guarded by U.S. Army Air Corp security members circa 1940s. The F-4 was flown by 1st Lt. Edward Peterson when he crashed on Aug. 8, 1942, while serving as a pilot in the Army Air Forces at Colorado Springs Air Base. The base was later renamed in his honor.
