Important changes to government driver’s license regulations Published Dec. 23, 2008 By Dan Little 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- If you currently operate a government motor vehicle within the Peterson complex, a recent update to AFI 24-301 was published with changes that may affect you. AFI 24-301 requires all members - military, civilian and contractor - that operate a GOV, whether owned, leased or rented, to be in possession of an AF Form 2293, U. S. Air Force Motor Vehicle Operator Identification Card. This is in addition to having a valid state motor vehicle license. If a member's GOV license is from another installation, expired or states in the expiration date "indefinite," they must contact their unit's Vehicle Control Officer to get a new license through the Operator Records and Licensing office. Civilian employees operating GOVs must meet state licensing requirements, including the Code of Federal Regulations for a commercial driver's license if required. A civilian employee's physical fitness must be reviewed and documented as to their capability to operate a GOV every four years. Licensing of contractors requires the employee to be in possession of a valid state or commercial license and contractor's certification verified by the contracting officer is required before issuance of a GOV license to the employee. The contractor must certify employees are trained, licensed and physically qualified to operate GOVs and have been briefed on official use policies. This must be done in writing and signed by the contractor and coordinated through the Air Force Contract officer. The letter must remain current and be provided to the OR&L office. It is very important that all vehicle operators ensure they have a valid GOV license when performing their duties, and it's particularly important when in a temporary duty status. When acquiring a new or revised GOV license, you must contact your VCO to complete all necessary documents before a license will be issued. If you have questions concerning licensing requirements contact the 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron's OR&L office at 556-7967 or 556-4495.
