Peterson NCO squashes competition in statewide racquetball tournament Published April 22, 2009 By 21st Space Wing Public Affairs Office PETERSON AFB, Colo. -- Senior Master Sgt. Ray Cordero, 21st Medical Group first sergeant, made quite a racket when he captured the 2009 Colorado Racquetball State Championship Men's 35-plus and 40-plus division in a recent tournament held in highland, Colo. While he practices and competes year-round, Sergeant Cordero steps up the pace before tournaments, practicing as much as three hours per-session. "I try to double my practice and playing time before tournaments," he said. "I normally play every Monday, Wednesday and Friday on base and off base on Tuesday and/or Saturday and Sunday." Sergeant Cordero serves as the Air Force Racquetball Team coordinator and has been a member of the team since 2001. He is also a member of the Peterson Racquetball team and has been inducted into the Peterson fitness center's Ring of Fame, a fitness center program recognizing outstanding wing athletes. "His racquetball ability is above and beyond," said Mike Coats, 21 SW intramural sports director. "His support of the game also inspires others to play and he's always willing to help others improve their game." Sergeant Cordero will represent the Air Force in the upcoming U.S. National Singles Racquetball Championship in Houston beginning May 20.
