Fitness center energizes aerobics, spinning classes Published June 24, 2009 By Margie Arnold 21st Force Support Squadron PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Peterson Airmen and civilians now have the chance to shake things up with Zumba dancing and develop core strength and balance through the Chinese martial art of Tai Chi. Both classes are featured on the fitness center's new aerobics and spinning class schedule. Zumba dancing consists of movements of fast and slow Latin and International rhythms, combined with resistance training to tone and sculpt the body while burning fat. Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art offering sport and health benefits. The new spinning schedule includes a Spin Tone class scheduled for 4:15 p.m., Tuesdays, and a "Spin Abs" class scheduled for 4:15 p.m., Thursdays. Both classes are offered through August 26 on a trial basis. The aerobics schedule includes Tai Chi and Zumba, along with kickboxing, power pump, back to basics, yoga, Pilates, intervals, and more. "It's a chance for our patrons to try something new," said Les Stewart, Fitness & Sports Center special programs. "We've listened to their comments and suggestions and, after months of working with contractors and the base legal office, we now have a few more exciting fitness choices to offer." In addition to the new aerobics and spinning classes, Mr. Stewart said that beginning in July the fitness center will increase its number of personal trainers and massage therapists. A new health bar is currently in the works to offer a healthful menu with more selection. "We are able to give customers some of what they've asked for," said Mr. Stewart. "Hopefully, we will get more participation in the classes." Active-duty members have priority for aerobic and spinning classes and may sign up 30 minutes before class time. Dependents age 16 and older, retirees, Department of Defense civilians and reservists may sign up 15 minutes before class time. Civilian guests and contractors are not eligible for spinning or aerobics classes. Everyone must show their identification card at the front desk before receiving a pass for the class.
