Youngsters engage in learning at chapel

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- About 170 children participated in Vacation Bible School Truth Trek: Digging up God's Treasures at the Peterson AFB Chapel June 15 to 19.

"At most churches it (Vacation Bible School) is part of the summer program," said Trish Mehner, Peterson AFB Chapel Protestant religious education coordinator. "(but here) it is an extension of our regular religious education from both Catholic and Protestant sides,"
The basis of the curriculum is what people have in common and not what they have separate, she said.

Students, teachers and volunteers from Catholic and Protestant parishes began planning the curriculum for the vacation school in February. Staff and volunteers researched denominations and nondenominational resources in their decision to use LifeWay Ministries Truth Trek curriculum.

"Our girls were a little apprehensive the first day and are now more comfortable," said Lisa Limbough, on the third day of the school.

Ms. Limbough is mother to 6-year-old Tiffany and 7-year-old Sweetpea Limbough, both of whom participated in VBS activities.

About 40 volunteers including teachers, kitchen staff, parents and older siblings that are 12 years old or older assisted with the vacation school.

"...You learn a lot from children if you just take the time to listen," she said. "You learn what you don't know by hearing others' perspectives."

As part of the curriculum, children learned from a training video, participated in activities such as daily journaling, and five different crafts in groups. Children participated in four different learning level.

"The relationship between students and teachers is wonderful," Ms. Mehner said.
Parents gathered at the chapel June 19 in the VBS culmination ceremony, which included children performing songs and dances they learned.

"The kids really get into the music full force," Ms. Mehner said. "Seeing the looks on the adults' faces, they are seeing their kids grow in their faith. It is like watching a flower open up - it is gorgeous."
