Peterson to host wing’s first-ever DoD financial event Published Aug. 7, 2009 By Tech. Sgt. Ray Bowden 21st Space Wing Public Affairs PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Col. Stephen Whiting, 21st Space Wing commander, will host the Department of Defense Financial Event Aug. 21 and 22 at the base auditorium and chapel. This event, co-sponsored by the deputy under secretary of defense for military community and family policy, is designed to assist Airmen and their families with financial management. Financial lifestyle expert and author Deborah Owens will be featured as the keynote speaker; and her presentation will cover investing and controlling personal finances. Ms. Owens will also be available to give free counseling to Peterson Airmen and their family members. According to Christina Fornander, 21st Space Wing personal financial readiness lead, the Peterson spin on this event is to inspire Airmen to "command their financial future." "The goal is not to be controlled by money, but to be the one in control of your money," she said. Identity theft expert John Sileo is also scheduled to appear as guest speaker to advise Airmen on how they can protect their identity. "We've never hosted event like this before, but I know it will be an invaluable experience for those who attend," said Col. Wayne Monteith, 21st SW vice commander. "Any program that helps alleviate financial stress is a good thing in my book. I highly encourage supervisors to help get the word out and attend this event with their Airmen." The program will feature "break out" sessions at the chapel and youth activities at the R. P. Lee Youth Center. Refreshments will be available throughout the day. All event workshops, counseling services and youth activities are free of charge to Peterson Airmen and their families. Anyone wishing to attend may register at www.21fss.com/inside.php?page=amn-fam.
