PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Peterson dorm residents had a town hall meeting Nov. 23 to discuss events and procedures influencing Airmen on base.

In attendance was Col. Stephen N. Whiting, 21st Space Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Tim Omdal, 21st Space Wing command chief, who both had messages of welfare and concern for dorm residents, addressing issues such as drinking and holiday safety.

"Alcohol is an adult choice you can make in moderation. Just because you can make that choice, doesn't mean you should abuse that choice," Colonel Whiting said. "Help us with responsible alcohol use and be a good wingman."

Residents, dorm managers, and the wing leaders discussed improvements to both the dorm buildings and quality of life for residents.

Many improvements, either being implemented or in the planning stages, have occurred as a result of communication between Airmen, dorm managers, and wing command.

New kitchen facilities in dorm buildings, better washers and dryers and free wireless Internet in dayrooms are just some of the improvements that are being made to the dorms based on feedback from Airmen. In many cases, the 21st SW has partnered with U.S. Northern Command, Air Force Space Command or Army Strategic Command to improve the quality of life for dorm residents.

Wing leadership will be taking into account a recent focus group of nearly one-third of single Airmen on base and incorporate better programs that reflect the current status of social living on base in light of the Year of the Air Force Family.

One major change dorm residents could see as early as spring is the closing of the dining facility for needed repairs and renovation. If this happens, residents could receive temporary Basic Allowance for Subsistence while the facility is under reconstruction.

Other current projects include a covered patio for the Cyber Café, fire pit, weather stripping and consolidated manager's office, said Staff Sgt. Scott Gentle, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron housing manager.

In all, dorm residents have seen several changes on account of involved leadership and open dialogue. Continued involvement of residents will make future changes a possibility as dorms continue to grow.
