21st Force Support Squadron stomps 561st Network Operations Squadron Published Jan. 23, 2009 By Walt Johnson CSMNG PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The 21st Force Support Squadron used an awesome offensive force to defeat the 561st Network Operations Squadron 82-56 in Over 30 basketball action Jan. 15 in the Peterson Fitness and Sports Center. There were two intriguing stories that took place during the game. The first was the offensive juggernaut of the FSS team that played the game with only four players. The second was the offensive showing of the 561st NOS's Mike Allen who finished the game with a game high 34 points in a losing effort. The outcome of the game was settled rather early as the FSS team came out as hot as furnace working in sub zero temperatures as it made every conceivable shot possible while building up a huge first half lead. The lead extended into the second half when the lead grew to as much as 24 points at one point representing the largest margin between the two teams. So dominant was the FSS effort that it appeared they could have launched shots from the equipment counter and they would have found the bottom of the net. Roger Hill, Chris Gunn, Haywood Miler and Warren Schroeder were hitting from the inside and the outside at an amazing 70 percent rate. Hill, Gunn and Miller were firing from the perimeter while Schroeder controlled the inside for the FSS team that is playing some outstanding basketball lately. The only thing more impressive than the FSS showing was the one man gang Allen turned into for the 561st. As impressive as the four man offensive was for the FSS team, Allen's performance was just that and more as he made shots inside and outside and just seemed to never recognize his team was not as competitive on this day as it would have liked to be. Allen said he knew he was having a good day on the floor but he also realized his team was not as competitive as it wanted to be. Allen's story is amazing when you realize he did not play organized basketball when he was coming up. Allen was a wrestler and has become a runner but he said two things brought him to the basketball court at this point in life and opponents are probably wishing it hadn't. "The unit needed another body for the team so I thought it would be a good idea to come out and play basketball. I like playing the game because it gives me a workout that is different from running and I feel it gives me a good workout," Allen said. The FSS team continued a run that has seen it win five of its last seven games after starting the season 1-3. Hill said the team is beginning to find itself and it knows the formula it will use for the rest of the season that should help it continue to be successful. "We want to have a balanced offensive attack and we had that today. Our philosophy is however has the hot hand we are going to feed him. This team wants to play with a lot of teamwork and that his how we feel we will win. The chemistry on this team is great and we all have a pretty good feeling for what our roles are," Hill said. Gunn said the team has players that have played together in the past and that helps them when they come to the court. He said as good as the team feels about playing with each other is the opposite of the way they feel when they play other teams. He said on the floor the FSS team is not looking to have chemistry with any other team, but they are looking to make its point known to all opponents. "We don't come out to make friends on the basketball court we come out to beat people. Our goal is to win and that means we may make some enemies along the way but that's all right because we aren't here to make friends," Gunn said.
