The 367th Recruiting Squadron's Colorado Springs recruiting flight recently won the prestigious Air Force Recruiting Service Top Overall Enlisted Accessions recruiting flight award, nabbing first place from 286 flights for fiscal year 2009.

Col. William Welch, Air Force Recruiting Service commander's mobilization assistant, presented the annual award at the unit's annual awards banquet.

The award recognizes the recruiting flight with the best overall performance record in the Air Force national competition. The competition reflects U.S. Air Force requirements to recruit quality men and women with the right skills, at the right time, in the right numbers, to sustain the service's combat capability.

During the award presentation, the guest speaker, former Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Robert Gaylor, took the stage. Chief Gaylor fired-up the crowd of 120 Airmen and their spouses who appeared to appreciate hearing from the chief who had a reputation for giving enthusiastic motivational speeches.

Master Sgt. William Malcolm, 367th RS flight chief, said, "Recruiting is still a demanding yet very rewarding job and this team of recruiters from Colorado Springs did it better than anyone last year."

The top Air Force recruiting flight is headquartered in Colorado Springs and has an area of responsibility that encompasses Southern Colorado, and parts of New Mexico and Western Kansas.

Unit Airmen make numerous phone calls, give hundreds of school presentations and participate in scores of events each year, logging more than 10,000 miles of driving annually as part of the recruiting mission.

According to Lt. Col. Scott Maethner, 367th Recruiting Squadron commander, this is because the recruiters know the far-reaching implications their efforts have on national security and the benefits that Air Force life offers qualified residents.

"None of the awesome capabilities provided by the U.S. Air Force could exist without Airmen, and we would not have Airmen without Air Force recruiters," Sergeant Malcolm said. "I am very proud of what this team of recruiters accomplished this past year. I am also very proud of what they do every day. They sustain Air Force capabilities and are changing lives by providing tremendous opportunities to young Americans."
