21st CS tip of the week: Backing up data

Peterson network users are encouraged to save all important data to their personal (N:) drive because it ensures any problem with the computer will not affect important data saved on the network.

Because administrative privileges are needed to backup and restore center on windows vista, here is another way to backup your documents, desktop, favorites, and .pst (personal folder).
  • First go to windows explorer to begin the backup. Here is the path to get there.
  • Click on the start button on the lower left side of the desktop (The blue circle with the windows log in it)
  •  In the start search box above the start button type windows explorer
To backup all data within the documents folder follow these instructions:

  • On the left hand side of windows explorer under folders right click on documents
  • Select copy
  • Scroll down to computer and select it
  • In the middle of windows explorer find your (N:) drive
  • Right click on it
  • Then select paste (your documents should now be copied to your (N:) drive
To backup your desktop icons follow these instructions:
  • On the left hand side of windows explorer under folders right click on the desktop folder
  • Select copy
  •  Scroll down to computer and select it
  •  Right click on your (N:) drive
  •  Right click on it
  •  Select paste (your desktop should now be copied to your (N:) drive
 To backup your favorites for internet explorer follow these instructions:
  • On the left hand side of windows explorer under folders right click on the favorites folder
  • Select copy
  •  Scroll down to computer and select it
  • Right click on your (N:) drive
  •  Select paste (your internet explorer favorites should now be copied to your (N:) drive)
To backup your .pst (personal folder) follow these instructions:
  • On the left hand side of windows explorer under folders right click on the .pst folder
  • Select copy
  • Scroll down to computer and select it
  • Right click on your (N:) drive
  • Select paste (your .pst folder should now be copied to your (N:) drive)
