Michael Donley, secretary of the Air Force, and Col. Stephen N. Whiting, 21st Space Wing commander, presented the 21st Operations Group a well-deserved Meritorious Unit Award during a ceremony here April 13. Col. Nina Armagno, 21st Operations Group commander, accepted the award on behalf of the 21st OG warriors.

The 21st OG was approved for the award Feb. 9, when Gen. C. Robert Kehler, Air Force Space Command commander, signed the orders based on exceptionally meritorious conduct of combat operations from June 2, 2007 through July 7, 2009.

During this period, the 21st OG projected three expeditionary space control units, with a complement of operational-level command and control expertise, to various geographic locations in direct support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Pacific Command objectives. Bolstered by personnel and expertise from the Air Force Reserve's 380th SPCS, members of the 21st OG space control units contributed to decisive space superiority operations in ongoing overseas contingency operations despite threats from more than 270 indirect fire attacks.

These individuals applied lessons-learned from unprecedented, dynamic operations, and continually refined operations to ensure flexible employment of the newest non-kinetic capabilities to rapidly achieve combatant commander objectives.

The 21st OG warrior Airmen delivered key combat effects including, but not limited to, guarding high-priority combat signals, defending unmanned aerial vehicle sorties, supporting counter-improvised explosive device missions, prosecuting air tasking order events, and guaranteeing spectral availability for worldwide contingency operations.

Brig. Gen. Jay Raymond, 21st Space Wing former commander, was also in attendance along with other wing, group and squadron commanders, as the secretary spoke of the contributions 21st OG members made to the nation, U.S. allies, and many combat successes.
