Eagle Park Fit Trail not suitable for official fitness assessment Published Aug. 3, 2010 By 21st Force Support Squadron PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- With the implementation of the new Air Force fitness culture, Airmen across the base are looking for new methods of keeping in shape on a daily basis. At a recent 21st Space Wing commander's call, the question was raised about when, or if, the Eagle Park Fit Trail would be included as a route for use during fitness assessments. Officials from the wing's Fitness Assessment Cell and the Health and Wellness Center examined the Fit Trail to assess its suitability. The trail, however, has limited visibility for the members of FAC, who must assess all physical fitness tests. "The half mile fit trail is a great practice course," said Joshua Fly, Fitness Assessment Cell lead. Some people don't like the repetitiveness of just running in a circle, and the Fit Trail can provide an alternative option, he said. The red gravel trail is easy on knees and the trees can provide shade on a hot summer day. "Unfortunately, because of the limited visibility an assessor has over the entire course and length of the course, official fitness assessments cannot be performed on the Fit Trail," Mr. Fly said. "For safety reasons, the Fit Trail is just not suitable for official testing." If someone were to have an injury or medical emergency, the assessors might not see the individual go down due to the many trees and blind corners, and that could delay necessary medical attention, he said. So, after careful review of the course, the fit trail will not be used for official testing due to safety concerns. For information about the new fitness standards, call 556-5192.
