It seems like another routine upgrade: replace old shelves in the library with new ones. But it's much more than that.

The library is getting a new, fresh look inside and will expand its collection with more books and DVDs.

"The old shelves were showing their age, and it was time to replace them," said Kathy Kucharski, library manager.

The new shelving, she said, will be made of strong wood frames with sturdy metal shelves, identical to the shelving in the children's room at the library except for color - they'll be gray instead of beige. Those shelves in the children's room were replaced in 2009. And, there will only be a maximum of three shelving units jointed together - a main unit and two add-ons, Ms. Kucharski said.

North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command provided the funds for new shelves, and is also providing the funds for new sofas, reading chairs, study tables and chairs, computer desks and chairs, reference tables and study carrels and a circulation desk. The commands even provided funding for new books, audio books and DVDs.

In the future, the library's small meeting/conference room will be converted into a learning center and will be equipped with new furniture and a projection TV, making it fit for classes and meetings.

The library already has made noticeable improvements to its facilities with a young adult game zone and children's computer desks funded a few years ago. And, in June, the library's new software -- the Integrated Library System -- provided different methods of doing things.

"When the library reopens, patrons will enjoy a refreshing new look," Ms. Kucharski said.

The library will reopen Sept. 27, with extended hours: Monday to Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Fridays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and closed Sundays. During its closure, patrons can reserve and renew books online at www.21fss.com.
