On Oct. 10, members of the Cavalier community joined military members and their families at Cavalier Air Force Station for its inaugural 10K run. "Cav 10:10" began at 10 minutes after 10 a.m. following an invocation by Chaplain (Maj.) Robert Sugg from Grand Forks Air Force Base.

For two hours, runners, walkers, cyclists, ruckers and even family pets competed in a 10K (6.2 miles) race around base housing and the 10 story radar building. Visiting participants included Col. Nina Armagno, 21st Operations Group commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Rodney Reyes, 21st OG superintendent, who traveled from Peterson Air Force Base, for their annual visit.

"As the 10th Space Warning Squadron, we wanted to hold our own 10K run and create an event that could involve the local community," said Lt. Col. John Thomas, 10th SWS commander. "What better day than Oct. 10, 2010, at 10:10 in the morning?"

Four Airmen from 10th SWS took the challenge an extra step and decided to tackle the 10K with 45-pound packs. Colonel Thomas, Maj. Assad Samad, 10th SWS operations officer, Capt. Lawrence Hufford, 10th SWS mission support, and Tech. Sgt. Daniel Harris, NCOIC of Security Forces, laced up their boots and took to the race course combat-style. For others, the 10K was a new experience altogether.

"The longest I had run before this was 4.5, maybe 5 miles," said 2nd Lt. Abigail Coover, 10th SWS crew commander. "Six miles seemed like a long way, but it was far more fun than I expected. Once I pushed past old barriers, it brought me out into something I had never experienced before."

Participants from the ages of 2 to 62 later joined in a 1K "Fun Run" around base housing, which concluded the day's festivities.

"We hope this will become a tradition and continue to grow among the community," Colonel Thomas said.
