There is a small tree inside Peterson Library that librarian Charlotte Bonham is hoping will grow.

It's called a "Heroes' Tree" and it's meant for people to hang a small photo of their military "hero" - like a family tree. The initiative was started by the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University and is meant to honor military men and women for their service.

The photo can be of an active duty military member or a member who served years ago, like a grandparent or family member who has passed away.

"We would like to have all the ornaments by Veterans Day," Ms. Bonham said. "This is a tribute to veterans."

It's easy to get involved, Ms. Bonham said.
  • Create a handmade ornament honoring a servicemember in your family or community from a past or present war or military conflict.
  • Bring the ornament to the Peterson Library, Building 1171.
  • Include a short story or information about the servicemember on the back of the ornament. Ms. Bonham will scan the photo and information to submit to Military Family Research Institute.
  • Visit the "Virtual Heros' Tree" at www.cfs.purdue.edu/mfri/oht to view your ornament.
