Traffic safety paramount as winter approaches

Traffic safety is always a concern, especially during the winter months. Did you know injury levels can be severe even in low speed accidents?

Cross walks are becoming a concern here on Peterson and a dangerous trend is developing. When an individual crosses a two-lane road in a crosswalk on base, the vehicle closest to the person crossing the roadway stops, but the vehicle in the other lane fails to stop, creating a hazardous situation.

When crossing streets in crosswalks, don't assume vehicles will stop, make eye contact with the driver before proceeding across roadways.

Runners and joggers also have rules to follow, according to Air Force Space Command regulations, "Wearing portable headphones, earphones, or other listening devices while operating a motor vehicle, running, jogging, walking, bicycling, or skating on AF installation roadways is prohibited, with the exception of a hands-free telephone headset or single-bud earpiece." When running or jogging during hours of darkness or low visibility, the use of a reflective belt or vest is required.

Vehicle operators on the installation should slow down and give their fellow Airmen a "brake." Being a good Wingman requires vigilance and adherence to posted speed limits, especially in parking lots or densely populated areas such as base housing. Keep in mind one of the leading causes of preventable mishaps by vehicle operators is driver inattentiveness. Additionally, be on the lookout for pedestrians and cyclists in the early morning and evening hours as daylight dims.

Also, winter is upon us. Some points to consider in the winter months due to inclement weather conditions:
· Give yourself extra time to get to and from your destinations when operating motor vehicles
· Stopping distances increase three fold when driving in snow and five fold on ice
· Always winterize you vehicles prior to winter months
· Pack an emergency supply kit in the event you are stranded in your vehicle for an extended period of time.

On Dec. 2, the 21st Space Wing Safety Office and 21st Force Support Squadron are offering a free vehicle inspection from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Auto Hobby Shop, Building 640. For an appointment, call Tech. Sgt. Eric Seilaff at 556-6345.

Everyone must take personal responsibility for their own safety. Don't rely on others to make you safe.
