When the Outdoor Recreation staff came to work Feb. 2, they found more than phone calls to be returned. They found running water - almost everywhere. During the night, frozen water pipes upstairs broke and caused major damage to the building.

In less than 24 hours, Outdoor Rec quickly set up operations in the Kiddie Pool section of the Aquatic Center, Building 404. "For now, this is our temporary home," said Kevin Michaelsen, Outdoor Adventure Program Manager.

At their new, temporary location, customers can pick up and drop off their equipment, shop for retail merchandise, and sign up for trips. Customers can also bring their equipment to the Kiddie Pool to be tuned and serviced. Fortunately, the ski maintenance portion of Building 675 was relatively undamaged, so ODR can still tune and repair customers' equipment - transporting it to and from the ski shop as needed.

While the Kiddie Pool at the Aquatic Center is not as well established (in the rugged sort of way) as their previous shop, Mr. Michaelsen said Outdoor Rec can still provide customers with all the services they offered before -- except for one. "We can't sell lift tickets or season passes here, but folks can get still them at ITT," he said.

While water impacted the building, it has not dampened the staff's enthusiasm for their day and overnight adventure trips, added Michaelsen. "We are still giving customers information about upcoming trips, making reservations, and excited about our great trips." If you are scheduled to go on an Outdoor Rec trip, departures and returns will still be at their original location, Building 675.

Outdoor Rec's hours of operation will remain the same: Open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; closed federal holidays and on March 2 for training. Outdoor Recreation customers are asked to come to the front entrance of the Aquatics Center for questions, reservations and payments. Customers may come to the side door by the Kiddie Pool for the retail shop, and equipment sizing, pickups and returns.

Outdoor Rec also has a new telephone number - 556-3009. Just the one phone line. So, to book a trip or ask questions about programs, keep calling or stop in. They'll be happy to see you.
