Teens get early start on summer employment search Published Feb. 18, 2011 By Monica Mendoza 21st Space Wing Public Affairs staff writer PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- It is not too early for teens to start their summer job hunt. The Airman and Family Readiness Center wants to help teens get a jump on their search with a Job Search Techniques for Teens seminar, said Kehinde OshikoyaPamphille, AFRC spouse career focus program manager. The AFRC is hosting the seminar in advance of the Colorado Springs Governor's Summer Job Hunt Fair with the goal of giving Peterson youth a leg up, Ms. OshikoyaPamphille said. Each summer since 1981, the state has sponsored summer job hunt fairs across the state for teens and young adults ages 16 to 21. In Colorado Springs, the fair is hosted by the Pikes Peak Work Force Center's Youth Zone. Through the state-sponsored program more than 230,000 youth have found summer jobs ranging from clerical to labor to sales. Ms. OshikoyaPamphille said the AFRC job technique seminar is intended to give teens tips on how to make a first impression, how to dress for the job fair and how to highlight their work skills. She invited a panel of 10 employers to the AFRC seminar so they can answer questions about interviews, resumes and give pointers to teen job seekers. "Teens will learn how to get and keep a job, how to find job leads and write a resume and how to create a career portfolio," she said. Teens interested in finding a summer job are encouraged to attend the AFRC seminar and the Governor's Summer Job Hunt Fair, Ms. OshikoyaPamphille said. "We will walk them through how to put together a one-page resume to highlight who they are and what they have to offer," she said. "This (seminar) should have our military youth way ahead of others at the job fair - the goal is to have them ready," she said.
