Base's AFNet migration delayed slightly

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The Peterson AFNet migration is delayed one week and now begins Oct. 11. The specific unit migration schedule is being reworked to incorporate this change. The required network "freeze" is also moved to Oct. 1. All network changes will be paused until all 8,000 Peterson users are migrated.

As previously reported this migration does not include NORAD, NORTHCOM and ARSTRAT.

AFNet is part of an ongoing service-wide effort transforming cyber operations and establishing a centralized network under a single commander's direction. Peterson's transition is expected to run through mid-December.

The most visible changes include:

The Peterson NIPRNet Helpdesk (556-COMM) will transition service calls to the AFNet Enterprise Service Desk. The ESD helpdesk will take over user calls for trouble tickets for NIPRNet desktop service requests. This transition will be transparent to Peterson network users.

The designation of a new email address - military, civil service and contractors will keep for the duration of their career, employment or affiliation with the Air Force - Think email for life.

The migration replaces the old first.last@peterson.af.mil email address with a standard @us.af.mil email address, allowing central management of these accounts. Remember to update your business cards with your new email address as soon as possible.

Around the clock access to email and network services such as the Air Force Portal, Air Force Personnel Center, Defense Finance Accounting Service and other sites requiring authentication

Airmen who are temporary duty, deployed or in permanent change of station status can communicate and manage personal information through any Air Force common access card-enabled computer

Migration into AFNet also effectively eliminates the past practice of deactivating and creating accounts, and immediately makes Airmen more productive and effective during change of station moves

To prepare for the migration, we encourage you to reduce the size of your mailbox by deleting unnecessary files and moving others to personal folders.

Each Peterson network user will receive notification prior to their specifics units' migration. The 21st Communications Squadron communications focal point will use a mix of email notifications and network computer pop ups to get the word out.
