21st SFS continues traffic enforcement efforts Published July 10, 2012 By Katherine Hammer 21st Security Forces Squadron PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- School is out, the smell of barbecue is in the air, and new faces appear all around us. These are all indicators we are amidst another season of permanent changes of station. During this time, personnel learn routes to work, explore new areas and meet new people. They also get accustomed to local rules and regulations. The men and women of the 21st Security Forces Squadron hope to ease this transition for new personnel, and we assume the rest of us could use a reminder as well. Our security forces Airmen use a variety of methods to maintain the safety of personnel and property on the installation. Speed measuring devices and selective traffic enforcement, using intelligence-based policing, are some of the techniques used by members of the 21st SFS. Speeding, using a cellphone without using a hands-free device, failing to use seat restraints, and failing to stop or yield are the most common moving violations for which security forces cite Peterson personnel. Our lives are busy, and we all seem distracted by one thing or another, but distracted driving can be deadly. Using a cell phone without using a hands-free device while driving is not only prohibited on the installation, but it places you, your passengers and others in danger. Texting while driving is prohibited on base, as well as throughout the state of Colorado. Our security forces continue to issue citations to drivers failing to wear their seat belts. Even though this task takes seconds to accomplish and can be lifesaving. Additionally, SF members continue to see citations issued for children who are not restrained. All vehicle occupants must wear appropriate restraints. To operate a vehicle on Peterson, drivers must have proof of ownership or registration, a valid driver's license and proof of current vehicle insurance. Drivers cited for not having proof of insurance must bring proof to the security forces squadron, Building 350, suite 1253, within 72 hours, or the next duty day. Failure to follow these rules could result in a suspension of base driving privileges. Below are some tips for drivers who are pulled over: · Turn your vehicle off. · Stay seated and remain in your vehicle. · Retrieve your driver's license and other required documents but keep your seatbelt on unless instructed to remove it. · If cited, you are required to report the citation to your commander or first sergeant within 24 hours or the next duty day. · Contractors and DOD employees must report the citation within 24 hours to their supervisors. · Family members and civilians should report to their sponsors, and the sponsors must then report (within 24 hours or the next duty day) the offense to their commander or first sergeant, or supervisor if civilian. · To rebut a traffic citation within five duty days of the citation, contact the 21st SFS reports and analysis section, Building 350, suite 1253 in person or via mail at 21 SFS/S5R, 135 Dover St., Suite 1055, Peterson AFB, Colo., 80914.
